Personal branding photography: which photos do you need for your website and social media?
From a main portrait to website banners with free space and vertical shots for Reels: how to plan a branding shoot that's truly useful.

When someone visits your website or business page, they probably see your photos before reading about your services. Those images are a chance to introduce yourself, your work and the way you work.
But which photos do you need for that? Is one professional portrait enough, or should you prepare a varied set?
Personal branding photography starts with exactly that question: what should a client see and know about you?
What is personal branding photography?
Personal branding photography is a cohesive set of images that introduces you and your business professionally: portraits, photos of you at work, the tools of your trade and images for the different parts of your website and social media.
A consultant, for example, may need a portrait for the about page, an image while explaining something and a few photos for educational content. A designer can show details of designs, materials and process alongside a portrait.
The goal is photos that genuinely relate to what you do and that work in many places.
What is the difference between a headshot and branding photos?
A headshot focuses on the face and shoulders and is used for your LinkedIn profile, CV or team page.
Branding builds a broader picture of your professional identity. Clothing, posture, background and props all become part of the story.
If you just want a new profile picture, a headshot session may be enough. If you need images for your website, services and content, plan a branding set from the start.
Which photos do you need for your website and social media?
1. One recognisable main portrait
This is your main introduction image — for your business profile, contact page or short bio. Your face should be clear and your expression should match how you relate to clients: warm and smiling, or calm and more formal.
What matters is that when a client meets you in person, they recognise the same person they saw in the photo.
2. A photo for your About page
Your About page leaves more room for personality. A half-length or seated portrait often works well.
Think about how you usually talk to clients. Is your contact friendly and relaxed? Are you more of a guide or adviser? The image can reflect exactly that.
3. Photos that explain your work
Besides your face, clients want to understand what you do: reviewing a design, taking notes, working with specialist equipment or presenting a product. Props should have a real purpose — a laptop or coffee cup only helps if it belongs to the story.
If your work depends on a specific environment, some images are best taken at your workplace. In the studio we focus on portraits, details and situations that can be staged naturally.
4. Landscape images for the top of your website
A photo that works as a profile picture is not necessarily right for your website header, where a title, description or booking button usually sits beside the image. You need a few landscape photos with enough free space on one side for text.
If your website design is ready, show the page to your photographer beforehand: where the text goes affects the framing.
5. Portrait-format images for social media
For posts, Stories and content covers, vertical images are useful. Plan these frames from the start so hands or important parts aren't cut off when cropping.
A mix of close-ups, half-length and wider frames gives you more options for publishing content.
6. Details related to your business
Not every image needs to show your face. Hands at work, a sketchbook, a product or specialist tools are great for presenting services and accompanying educational posts.
These photos add variety, so you don't have to reuse the same portrait for every post.
What should you wear for a branding session?
Choose clothes that fit well and feel comfortable, close to what you'd wear when meeting a client.
If you bring several outfits, give each a clear purpose — for example a more formal one for your professional introduction and a relaxed one for everyday content.
Check your colours against your website and the background. Not everything has to match your logo; it just needs to sit well with your visual identity.
How do you prepare for the shoot?
Before the session, write down your answers to these questions:
• Exactly which pages and channels will I use the photos on?
• Who is my main audience?
• Which of my qualities should come across?
• Which services or parts of my work should be shown?
• Do I need landscape, vertical or both?
• Which clothes and props help show my work?
A few reference images help too. Note what you like about them: the light, the colours, the pose or the simple background.
How many photos do you need?
It depends on how you'll use them. As a starting point, you could plan:
• one main portrait for your profile;
• two images for your About page;
• two landscape images for your website;
• three images about your work and services;
• several vertical shots and details for content.
This list is a planning aid, not the number of photos in a specific package. Before booking, agree on the number of final images, editing and intended use with your photographer.
What if you're not comfortable in front of the camera?
You don't need to know how to pose. Talking about your work, doing a simple task and small changes in how you sit or stand are a great starting point.
If you're worried about your face angle, your hands or your smile, mention it beforehand so we can pay attention to it during the session.
